A body massage, which many may consider an indulgence, actually helps to decrease levels of stress hormones in the body. The circulation of blood carrying food and oxygen to all parts of the body provides a defense against infection. It carries away waste products via the lymphatic system which is our body's first line of defense against disease. Therefore, an increase in circulation as a result of massage is going to improve nutrition in the tissues and remove waste products more effectively and increase cellular regeneration.

Massage also calms the nervous system by inducing the brain to release chemicals - natural painkillers and mood enhancers.

A massage also improves the colour of the skin because of the increase in circulation which causes the capillaries to dilate; removal of waste products is speeded up through the lymphatic system and the sweat glands, therefore cleansing the skin. Skin texture is improved as the dead skin cells are desquamated from the surface. The activity of the sebaceous glands is increased therefore more sebum is produced to make the skin soft and supple. This helps to keep it intact preventing bacteria from entering.
